Rainwater Catchment - Providing Clean Water for Students
This project stemmed from the construction of one 20,000-liter rainwater catchment basin, that provides clean water for the students at Lycee Alakamisy Albohimaha in Fianarantsoa, Madagascar. During her Peace Corps Service, Alyson Lucas, with the lead of her community, obtained a USAID-funded grant for the project and training of staff. Local school and community leaders went to Tolagnaro (Fort Dauphin) and trained with Tati Rano (a local NGO that specializes in these structures and supplied the funds for the 5,000-liter basins and the training in Fianar).
The extended project provided three 5,000-liter basins at neighboring schools and trained local masons and water experts on the construction of similar structures so that clean and economical drinking water can proliferate around the region. This project, organized in collaboration with ZARASOA, has extended rainwater harvesting knowledge to builders from the Madagascar-based NGO Ny Tanantsika and the international NGO Health in Harmony.
Today ZARASOA continues to build rainwater harvesters with the support of our donors and friends that follow along our journey.
